Tell me about FantasyRole? [ top ]
FantasyRole is a place where you can come to escape. We create our own fantasy characters and write interactive stories with them on board. The stories are written in the forums, or via the chatrooms.
We're a community for storytellers, role-players, readers, writers, poets: anyone with a good imagination and a willingness to participate.
Does FantasyRole represent a realm or world? [ top ]
The site itself does not represent a realm or world or particular period of time. It's up to the members to create their own setting for their stories or plots. There are groups on the site (which are created by members) and these are invariably set within a particular setting. A simple example is a drow group set within the D&D Forgotten Realms settings, or a vampire setting within World of Darkness. The free-form stories forum allows open play in any form (PG13).
Does the Fantasy in FantasyRole mean that if you RP present day, futuristic, V:tM etc. that those types of RP are excluded from the site? [ top ]
Not in the slightest.
The way we define fantasy is "not real life." All manner of role-playing groups and characters are more then welcome to use the services of the site; indeed, are fully encouraged to use the services of the site.
Does it cost anything to join FantasyRole? [ top ]
No. We're non-commercial and community-based.
Should I use T1, T2 or Para on the site? [ top ]
fantasyrole.org doesn't endorse any particular type or style of role-play. You'll find your own feet when interacting with other members. With some groups, they may have particular guidelines to follow.
What's the difference between player (member) and characters on the site? [ top ]
Your member profile should reflect who you are a person (you can decide to give away as much information as you please, and upload a picture if you like), whereas your characters are used for your stories or role-playing plots. You Member Alias is often noted as your Out of Character (OoC) alias.
How do I link directly to my character or group? [ top ]
Your group or profile page has a link in it, e.g. http://profiles.fantasyrole.org/marok_lond/
Can I become a Moderator? [ top ]
People can be made Moderators to the website, but only after a great deal of consideration by site administrators. People can be made full or partial moderators, once again, this is up to us for consideration. When you create a group, though, you do have full control of everything that happens within that group, and you can create your own moderating team of staff.
Where can I report problems or make suggestions? [ top ]
Please use the General Forum or Feedback Board to do this. We appreciate you taking time to feedback!
Where can I register a complaint? [ top ]
You can't. :P Send a private message to "The Silverlord" explaining the issue and we'll look into things.
Who can I contact at FantasyRole? [ top ]
You can contact anyone on the site staff if you have any site-related queries.
Any member of the team will try their best to help you.
Groups
What is a Role-Playing Group? [ top ]
FantasyRole defines a role-playing group chiefly as a gathering of player characters (PC), the controlling players' of whom participate in various method of role-play, including but not limited to, chat- and forum-based role-play.
A group can also be viewed, independently, as a point of information and resource. A group can store background, history, data, images and documentation relevant to a role-playing world or realm, organisation, faction or sect.
What features does each RP Group offer? [ top ]
When, and if, you create a group, a host of spectacular features become available:
- Change its Design and Look and Feel
- Design Content Items
- Create New Pages of Content
- Optional Character and Player Member Listings
- Link to Sites of Relevance
- Create User-Defined Databases with unlimited fields
- Upload Development Files, Documents and Pictures
- Create any number of Group Forums
- Post Bulletin News
- Create a Group Timeline and/or Journal
- Set Group Permissions to your liking
How do I join an RP Group? [ top ]
You can join a group by going to that groups' home page and selecting one of your characters you wish to join that group.
You must therefore be a member, and have created a character profile to join any role-playing group. You cannot join through your member alias alone.
It should be noted that some groups may require initiation, sample transcripts, new character creation etc. before you will be allowed to join. For other groups you will immediately become a member. Since groups also have the ability to hide their content from non-members of the site (or non-members of the group), if you join you may find a wealth of content to explore.
Must I join an RP group? [ top ]
You don't have to.
But, you can. Don't ever feel afraid to join a group. Each group moderator will usually try their best to welcome you, and encourage you to make friends with other members.
If you, for any reason, join a group and decide you didn't want to, you can leave the group at any time (Member Options > Character Maintenance).
Note that the group moderator (and/or site moderator) can also remove your character from the group if they so choose.
Can I start my own RP Group? [ top ]
You can start your own group at any time (Member Options > Group Maintenance). You should however consider if you have enough individuals and content to make creating a group worthwhile.
I created a page but it hasn't appeared on my group contents! Help! [ top ]
You'll need to add a link to your contents using the Content Manager section under the group options. Give the page a name, then select the page you want to link to.
Can I post adult content in my group? [ top ]
Ask us (PM "The Silverlord") and we can give you the functionality to use ratings. These allow you and others to post material which cannot be viewed by non-members.
What is the Member's Hub? [ top ]
Each and every new member of FantasyRole automatically becomes a member of the Member's Hub.
It is quite simply a place for members to frequent and post materials; generally contribute on a member-wide scale. Think of it as a specialised group for FantasyRole members.
Stores
Merchant Stores [ top ]
A merchant store is essentially a shop which sells goods and items at specified prices. They are created by group moderators and are accessible under the Store Listing page.
Any site member who has created one or more character profiles can browse these stores and purchase items for his/her characters. Items bought can later be discarded, or sold on in barter.
Purchased items are displayed in the character profile and some details can be edited (the store operator must enable this function on generic items).
Store Basket [ top ]
When you browse the store, you can add items to a store basket for purchasing/bartering at any later stage. Items are added once, and when you View your Basket, you can specify desired quantities, and the character whom is purchasing. You can also state the money you want to offer and any items in your possession to meet the trade. This initiates a new Store Bartering process.
Store BarteringWhat Is It? [ top ]
Store Bartering is a means for you as a player to buy items for your character(s) by haggling a trade with the Store Operator. You might not have enough gold to purchase an item outright for your character, so you could initiate a barter and specify gold and some items from your possessions, for example, to make up the difference.
Or you could just claim your character is too poor and beg that you get the offer at a cut-down cost.
Once you initiate a barter, your item(s) request is sent to the Store Operator. They then review the barter, and can do one of three things:
- Accept: If the Operator accepts your barter tender then they get your offered goods, and you get your desired items as specified. The barter is then complete.
- Reject: The operator may be unhappy with the order, for any reason. They should provide comments for you to read, then return the barter to you to review, edit and resubmit.
- Terminate: The operator reserves the right (as do you) to terminate the barter at any stage and deny any transaction within their shop.
A barter can be rejected an infinite number of times, basically until both you and the store operator are happy that the goods transaction can take place. If you submit a barter offer and items you desire go out of stock, do not worry because the Operator cannot authorise it until you've seen these updates and agree to new terms. Similarly, a store operator will know when you no longer have the items in your inventory or money to offer in payment for the goods.
Quick-Buy Purchasing [ top ]
When browsing a store, if you have enough gold you can quickly purchase items you want to add to the possession of your character(s). Find the item, then at the bottom of the screen you'll see:

You'll be informed if any of your characters already own the item, and can select a character and quantity to make a purchase.
Wait, I need more gold! [ top ]
You are rewarded gold depending on your character(s) wealth rating. Gold can also be handed out by group moderators to members within their groups for the purposes of play and plot. Gold can also be handed out by Site Administrators to members in need (more on this soon).
Gold and currency should be used properly and responsibly for your characters, or your character may appear overly wealthy and thus false in the eyes of other role-players. Please use your history and background fields to describe the wealth of your character and explain what their occupation/job is.
Who are Store Operators? [ top ]
Store Operators are selected by Group Moderators when they create a store (or at any time thereafter) to oversee and manage the store. Store Operators must be playing members of the group, otherwise they cannot be selected to help. They have control over the designated store area, but cannot edit the group information, etc. A Store Operator receives Private Messages (PM) associated with barter offers.
A Store Operator can:
- Create New Store Items;
- Edit Item and Stock Data;
- View Buying/Selling Tracking information;
- Control and accept tendered barter offers;
Store Images [ top ]
If you are a group owner and creating and uploading store item images, please ensure you obtain permission of the copyright holder of the image. It is vitally important you respect the owner/artist of any image. As a rule, if you cannot contact the owner of the image, you should not post the image.
If the owner requires you to place a copyright statement on the image, and you do not know what you're supposed to do, please contact us here and we'll help you out.
If you do not obtain permission and proceed to upload images, these are subject to removal at any time.
Can I add my own objects to the Merchant Store? [ top ]
Not yet.
We will be updating the section soon with new features and an entirely new structure.
Tournament Battle
What are Tournament Battles? [ top ]
Tournament Battles allow you to create set/random one-vs-one (or team-vs-team) draws ripe for any in-game battle or contest. Combatants (characters) will square off against one another, and results are recorded by advancing the winner through to the next round. This is perfect for Deathmatch tournaments!
Tournament Battles are highly customisable, and there is even an option to create a forum dedicated to discussion, judging decisions, and conditions of each fight. You can also: Manage, moderate, and customise up to 64 entries;
Restrict members to entering one, two or unlimited character entries;
Hide or reveal new entries as they enter;
Tailor one-vs-one, team-vs-team, or one-vs-team entries etc.;
When entries are in, randomise the draw (or draw as per entry list order);
Publicise the Tournament;
Award winners with XP/Currency per round;
Add a design logo to your battle
Can I Create a Tournament Battle? [ top ]
Any member can create a Tournament Battle. This was previously restricted to members over XP Level 7.
How do I Join a Tournament Battle? [ top ]
Browse the tournaments listing (under Passtime > Battle Tournaments). Look for the battles that are presently seeking entrants, and click on the tournament name. On the right-hand side of the screen should exist a dropdown list with your characters listed. Simply click on the character you wish to enter, and click the Enter Tournament button.
Your entry will be processed by the tournament director and you will receive notification through a Private Message.
Compositions
Can I put up a erotic story or article? A story or article by someone else? [ top ]
No you cannot place an erotic story or anything not considered PG-13. Both original fiction (Learning Tools) and non-fiction (Pass Time) works will be accepted as long as they are by the original author. These works are considered the property of their respective authors and using them without permission is considered unlawfull. Any work by another party we ask that you refer to a moderator who will seek to gain permission to place it on Fantasy Role. Points will still be awarded for the refferall.
Where can I put up my rp related articles? [ top ]
Non-Fiction works should be placed in the RP Articles section of Learning Tools. For an example an essay on George Washington that tells about his life and thoughts would be acceptable in the Articles section if it is a resource for rpers and specifically written to rpers as an audience. In this same vein a article on how to role play, create a character are also considered fiction as a sort of mannual. When you put an article up on the site you receive 25 points of player exp.
Where can I put up my rp related fictional writings? [ top ]
Fiction writings such as short stories, novelettes, poetry, screenplays, plays, fan fiction ect should be placed in the Tales and Compositions section of Passtime. These should not be transcripts of chat rp.
Should I add a disclaimer if a composition is based on a transcript? [ top ]
Yes, compositions based on transcripts are only considered permissable to place on the site if the other players in the transcript have given permission. If it is not possible to contact and gain permission to write such a composition then the screen name of the player should be noted in a disclaimer and the inability to contact the individual noted. Also it is considered a courtesy to note any individuals by screen name ect that participated in the composition even when permission to write such a composition or put up such a composition is given.
Do I need a disclaimer for Fan Fiction? [ top ]
Yes, when creating fan fiction include a disclaimer about how the composition is merely fan fiction and not considered property of the television ect that created the characters ect. As well note that the characters ect are the property of the television ect that created them and the composition is merely in public veiw for the amusement of other fans. This applies as well to any composition you create that has some aspect whether it be character or background that is based upon a source in the media.
What should I do if I sell a composition or article to a publisher? [ top ]
Any composition or article sold or published with several authors should dole out any profits to all individuals whom worked on such writings. Though traditionally the high percentage should lie with the individual or individuals editing such a work into the form acceptable for publishing. An early visionary who created mutiple author writings similar to what may be created online thru online chat role-playing is Alexander Dumas the author/editor of "The Three Musketeers". Multiple author writings have been around a while. A publisher may also request that you remove your writing from the Fantasy Role site, if so we will cry, however we will be extremely happy for you and perhaps jealous. One of us will likely request an interview and if you go on book tours or on televison or radio ect. it would be extremely nice if you mentioned our url, that is www.fantasyrole.org, don't forget your roots bucko or we all may decide to trash you. It would be nice as well if you threw a donation in to help out the site!!!!
